That afternoon...

"Yeah, the Acorn is good and all, but you haven't really shopped until you've shopped there," the 16-year-old 5'7" redhead known as Katie McBride says to her friend Mingmei "Ming" Wu as they, along with their friend Samantha "Wolfie" Wolf, step onto the bus to take them out of Tandy and into the nearby town of Goldthwait.

"The mall's good and all," Wolfie interrupts her fellow redhead. "But there's better to be found in town than the mall."

"What would that be?" asks Ming who, despite her Chinese name is actually Japanese, although there's a lot more outlandish things to her than a name that doesn't match her supposed home continent.

"A haunted house. Rumor has it two guys went in recently and one of them hasn't been seen since while the other strangely disappears all the time."

"That old myth?" Katie asks with a smirk. "Come on, Wolfie, that's a story to scare grade-schoolers."

"You should know better than to rule it out," Wolfie chuckles. "The two of us are a pair of weres, we have a friend who's a witch of some type, and the friend with us used to be a teacher at our school and a guy at that. Don't you think ghosts are a possibility?"

"I think it sounds like fun," Ming says, causing Katie to sigh.
